History of Jamaican Blue Coffee

Coffee in Jamaica began in 1728 with a single plant gifted by the Governor of Martinique to Sir Nicholas Lawes, the governor of Jamaica at the time. The governor of Martinique himself had gotten three plants from the King of France at the time, King Louis XV, in 1723. Jamaica turned out to be an ideal growing ground for the Coffee, and the rest is, of course, history. The coffee industry blossomed from that single plant and has been going ever since.

Why Jamaican Blue Coffee is so rare

Jamaican Blue Coffee is only grown in one tiny area of the world, only about 9,000 acres (about 1/3rd of Jamaica's growing area) is set aside for growing Jamaican Blue Coffee. That's because Jamaican Blue Coffee can only be grown in the blue mountains, a hazy cloud covered range that is relatively small compared to the rest of the coffee-growing world. It can also only be grown from high-quality Arabica beans, and can only be grown above 4,000 feet.

Once grown, it can't be called Jamaican Blue Coffee just yet. It must be inspected by JACRA (Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority). Finally, the approved Coffee is packed in wood barrels and is the only kind in the world to do so.

80% of Jamaican Blue Coffee is shipped off to Japan immediately, with just 20% left for the rest of the world, making it extremely rare if you don't happen to live in this one country.

The narrow profile for these beans results in a very small growing area, and a very high price tag, but most coffee lovers around the world agree that it is well worth the price.

Flavor profile

Jamaican Blue Coffee has a unique flavor thanks to the nitrogen-rich soil it is grown in. The coffee is highly acidic. American expert, Kenneth Davids, author of "Coffee. A Guide to Buying, Brewing, and Enjoying," wrote in his latest edition that Blue Mountain "is, or was, a balanced, classic coffee with rich flavor, full-body, and a smooth yet vibrant acidity."

Apart from acidity, Jamaican Blue Coffee has a silky smooth finish, balanced, and has a somewhat unusual sweet flavor to it. Despite its high acidity, it has virtually no bitterness, another unusual trait of this unique Coffee.

Perceptive coffee drinkers may note nutty or even herbal overtones. The Coffee also has a unique smell to it, said to "sparkle" when the aroma is taken in.

When you sip a cup of Jamaican Blue Coffee, you are sipping some of the rarest and most beautiful flavors on earth. Just as there are fine wine and fine dining, this is truly a fine coffee worth searching for.
